Variety is the Spice of Life

I'm sure that at some point, you've heard someone say the phrase, "Variety is the Spice of Life". It's interesting though that many people who hear this most likely never realize the value behind it, nor the positive effect that variety can have on one's happiness in life.

You may be a creature of habit who always does the same thing over and over again, whatever it is. For example, you may be a person who goes to the same vacation spot every year and does the same exact things each time.  What's ironic is that you might not actually be having much fun there anymore, but you keep doing it anyway.

You may serve or eat the same exact meals frequently, but you actually find them to be drab. Also, you might be doing the same things day in and day out, and may be bored out of your mind.

It's perfectly normal for people to get into a routine, or to do some of the same things over and over again because they enjoy doing them. As long as you're truly enjoying them, why not do them again? The trick is to not overdo them to the point at which they don't bring you joy anymore.

People can become robotic, and either because of laziness or lack of motivation and/or creativity, they fall into a very unsatisfying rut. When people get stuck in a rut, they become bored with life and in their relationships. They can then become depressed and retreat from others.

Happiness subsides when people don't challenge themselves to keep trying new things and keeping things exciting in their lives. Change is a good thing when it enhances the happiness you feel.

To be fair, we all have daily obligations that we must take care of and perform over and over again. Sometimes these obligations dictate the amount of flexible time we have available. That's okay, but its a good idea to keep your life stimulating by adding as much variety as possible, in whatever time you do have that is flexible.

We all want to be happier, right? Why not have the most fun we can, when opportunity knocks.  Life is just too darn short!

Here are some ideas you can try to liven things up in your life, to bring more excitement and joy to you and your loved ones:

  • Challenge yourself to create/serve different foods at home and at parties. Try not serve the same thing day in and day out or at every party.

  • Try a new and different vacation destination this year- or if you can afford it, add another vacation, to a totally different spot.

  • Try some new activity over the weekend that you'll find rewarding and add to your repertoire of weekend activities.

  • Learn a new skill or start a new hobby. Who knows? You may just have some talents that you didn't know you had.

  • Meet new people and make new friends. Don't dump your old ones, just add some more to your list of friends to learn more about life and people.

  • Try to be unpredictable with your family and friends, and keep them as positively surprised as possible. The most exciting friends are those who like to make your time with them interesting and fun.

  • Try a new restaurant the next time you go out for lunch or dinner. You just might expand your palate and ignite your inner adventurer.
