Live Smartly- Don't Pay More Than You Need To
My Live Smartly series is really all about not wasting money, and retaining more in your pocket so you can put it towards experiencing life to the fullest with your loved ones. So today, in the third installment, I'll give you some ways how you can buy the things you need and not spend more than you have to.
1- Promo Codes and Online Research for Lower Prices
When purchasing from online retailers, many times you can find promo codes for a percentage discount off of your purchase. Websites including RetailMeNot and others, have promo codes for possible discounts of 10, 15, 20% or more.
Also, if you see an item at a retail store, such as a furniture piece, if you record all of the pertinent manufacturer information (i.e. model and sku numbers), you might be able to find a lower price online at a discount retailer. Some offer steep discounts and are very willing to work with you to provide you a quote over the phone. Just check their policies regarding shipping and returns.
I've personally saved hundreds of dollars on purchases, using the internet to find better prices or discount promo codes.
2- Ebay and Other Online Auction Sites
You can rack up a good amount of savings on every day items by purchasing them through ebay. Many retailers sell items through ebay - both new and used items at lower prices. I've actually used ebay both as a purchaser and a seller, and I'm loving it.
3- Social Media
Online "Garage Sales" have become popular on Social Media websites. People sell their unwanted items at bargain prices and you can benefit greatly from that. Just be sure to review all of the information provided in the listing, meet at a safe location and use your judgement.
4- Opened Box Items/ Display Items in Retail Stores
Many retail stores have a few items that are packaged in boxes that were previously opened for for one reason or another, but everything is otherwise in perfect condition. Ask the salesperson to inspect the items in the box with you. Retailers many times, sell these items at a significant discount.
Also, many times you can buy a display item (aka floor model) at a drastic discount. They might have an inconspicuous scratch somewhere and be in acceptable condition. Some have virtually no damage or scratches and only be full of fingerprints that you can kindly ask the salesperson to clean off.
5- B.Y.O. Restaurants
For those of you who enjoy partaking in wine, beer and cocktails during dinner, a B.Y.O.(i.e. Bring Your Own) restaurant can greatly reduce the amount of your check. By bringing your own libations, that you've purchased on your own, you'll avoid the markup that restaurants charge you to order from the menu. Including B.Y.O. restaurants in your travels, can save you some money.
As you can see, there are very simple things you can do to save yourself some money, so you can put it towards more memorable and fun experiences for yourself and your loved ones. Most people don't have unlimited funds, so anything one can do to live smartly, helps people to live the life they want.
